The real reasons can be subsumed in four sets: firstly, the dismal record of the saffron party when the coalition it led was in power for six long years (1998-2004); secondly, its failure to offer a viable alternative to the Congress and its penchant with old issues and slogans; thirdly, the BJP’s alienation from its traditional constituency, the middle class; and, finally, its persistent and high-decibel attack on Manmohan Singh by calling him a ‘weak prime minister.’ Ravi Shanker Kapoor writes that the sooner the saffron party acknowledges them, the better it would be for it. |
